M:Tron Satellite Uplink

I am finally starting to feel like myself again after a week sick - so it's back to the M:Tron Lego.

This little set arrived in the mail today. It's the smallest of the M:Tron line, and the least interesting in and of itself.

It's also one of the rarest. Normally the small sets sell really well (because they are cheap) so become quite common - such was the case with the other small M:Tron sets.

But set 1478: Satellite Up-Link wasn't a normal set. It was only sold as part of a group of small sets - and only in the US. It's rare enough that NO ONE is selling one on Bricklink. Not on it's own anyway.

So in order to complete my collection, I sourced the individual pieces (none of which are rare) and recreated the set using the instructions from peeron.com.

The set only comes with one minifig - but his mate came along to help assemble it.

There is one M:Tron set that's even rarer though - it's a set that never even existed.... but that's a tale for another day.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the post office.... more reinforcements arrive from Germany!

I am planning a display/MOC based around the M:Tron theme - hence the sudden collecting.

The guys in this photo do not include the minifigs that came with each set - these are the loose figs. The British guys (who arrived earlier) are glued and have an odd white thing stuck on their back (part of how they were displayed at M&S) - the German ones have air tanks and can be taken apart.

And of course, there's always one doofus who puts his helmet on backwards....

M:Tron Crawler...

Reinforcements have arrived!

It feels a little like Christmas!

Christmas from about 20 years ago...

You see - a present arrived today. Ok, so it’s a present I bought myself - but it’s one I’ve wanted since about 1991. I had to source it from Germany.

It’s the M:Tron Crawler - the "Mega Core Magnetizer 6989".

M:Tron was a Lego theme that first appeared in 1990. It’s iconic red, black, and trans-neon-green colour scheme set it apart from anything that had preceded it.

I only had one small M:Tron ship growing up - but that didn’t stop me dreaming and drooling over the Lego catalogues for hours at a time.

The other space themes were keen to explorer or attack - but M:Tron was here to work. Mining, constructing, repairing, transport - this was M:Tron’s field.

Unlike all the space themes before it (and most after it), M:Tron didn’t have a base. The largest set was the Crawler. And now, 22 years later, I have finally assembled it.

From a Lego point of view, it’s quite cool. It uses a few techniques that probably wouldn’t be considered ‘legal’ anymore in an official set - and has some awesome rare parts.

The M:Tron theme was in love with magnets - and the crawler has at least 7 of them!

With the addition of the Crawler, I am now very close to owning the entire M:Tron line. Three sets remain - one small cheap one, one rare small one (which only ever came in a multi-pack), and one which never really existed.

I’ll collect them all in time...

And of course - there’s a timelapse of the Crawler build.

I was daydreaming in the shower yesterday when suddenly it hit me!

The cover from the exhaust fan fell off and clobbered me on the back of the head....

Helm's Deep - one of the most impressive Lego sets I've seen in ages.

I got it on sale at Myer for an awesome price too.

Now I want to modify it to make it displayable!

For those who don't know - Helm's Deep is the castle from Lord of the Rings: The Towers. If you didn't know - consider this homework - go and re-watch the movies/re-read the books!
