Gearbox Extraction

Well - had nothing more important to do this weekend, so decided to head down south and help Turks extract his gearbox from his laser.

While I don’t take responsibility for killing the gearbox, I was there when it happened (http://www.headlessmoron.com/viewthread.php?postid=693) so thought it was worth lending a hand - besides, I was interested to see what a gearbox looks like inside.

I went down on Friday night so we could get an early start on Saturday. Should have known that early starts and Turkey don’t go together. After sleeping in, buying Marty (Darth Strawberry) a car, and having lunch, we were finally ready to start on the gearbox.

Turkey’s car is silly - the engine is sidewise. Apparently that’s normal for a front wheel drive, but I prefer the Subaru design where the engine faces forwards. Anyway, after much effort and many hours, the Laser gave birth to a gearbox. It's a tiny little thing compared to the Pajero's, but I think the Pajero's might be easier to get at.

We cracked the cover and had a look at fifth gear and reverse, but it looked pretty complicated and Turks wasn’t sure if he’d be able to put it back together if we went any further, so he decided to wait until he could get some help from someone who actually knows what they are doing. Pity as I'd have liked to see more, but I can totally understand.

So then it was time for Minecraft of course!

Ok - so what’s new?

Well - I got back from Victoria and was shipped straight back early the next morning for work. Yay for me!

The work trip was good - but I ended up getting sick and have been feeling pretty miserable since. Pretty much over it now though.

In other news, I’m thinking of buying another car. Not as a replacement - but as a third one. Why yet another car? Well, for the sake of it really, and cause I’ve always wanted an early era Patrol.

It’d be the sort of thing I’d strip back to the chassis and rebuild.

And I’d found a good one in Melbourne for a very reasonable price - but alas someone beat me to it. Doh!

So I bought a very small Toyota (pictured) instead.

I’m still looking for my Patrol though.

Wandering around Victoria...

Back in the state - for a few hours at least...

On Monday, Dad, Mum, and Emma came through to my place and we headed over to Victoria on the Spirit. Dad had bought himself a brand new camper trailer on ebay from a seller in Melbourne, and we decided to give it a shake-down cruise.

So for the rest of the week, we just ambled around Victoria. Some parts of Vic were busy being flooded and evacuated, but we had a lovely time and avoided it all. Caught up with some family and friends - and just had a good time unwinding.

We arrived back in Tassie on the ship this morning, but I’m flying back early tomorrow for work - at least I get one night at home...

Sandy Cape Trip

Twas a long weekend - and Klutz and I headed west for a trip to Sandy Cape.

 Image

Tim had organized the trip - and this time decided to invite other people along. So as well as Klutz and I, we had Tim’s folks (Kerry and Lynn), his sister and husband (Adele and Brendan), and his mate and wife (Nick and Tanya). Oh, and Tim himself.

 Image

The elder Auties had a Range-Rover, Tim had his Maverick, and Brendan and Adele had a quad - and of course I had Oscar. Nick and Tanya were divided between the Landy and Maverick.

 Image

It was my first time at Sandy Cape - and it was a lot of fun, and not as challenging as I’d been expecting. Apparently there was a lot less water than normal though.

Good thing too - Oscar has started stalling when going in slightly deep water now. Got pulled out once because he’d stalled - started fine on the other side though. Haven’t worked out what’s causing it yet.

 Image

The Rangie had a tyre fall off the rim - and Tim’s Maverick overheated, but overall it was a relatively trouble-free run.

Hint for the future, if you’re getting a lift back up the track to help fix the tyre, don’t sit on the bonnet of an overheat Maverick - it gets blooming hot!

While in the lead I found a patch of nice soft sand and had to be helped out.

I did also manage to drive successfully (and accidentally) across a patch of quick sand that no one else was willing to attempt - so I don’t think Oscar should be too embarrassed.

I love the west coast. And it was very calm too - hardly any surf compared to other west coast adventures.

 Image

We followed some tracks up a sand dune - and then got told off by some rangers because we shouldn’t be there. Whoops - can't trust other people's tracks.

 Image

Ah well - make the most of it. Sand-boarding.

 Image

This was on the way up the dune - the Maverick had been completely airborne. Look at the break in the tracks - that’s quite a jump!

 Image

The campsite next to a river. It even had a flush loo - you just had to bucket the water from the river to use it…

So that was my long weekend. Pretty awesome if you ask me.
